'Buried' Preview: Moviegoers Get Trapped In A Box With Ryan Reynolds
Ryan Reynolds in "Buried"

You open your eyes and are greeted by nothing but darkness. Fumbling around blindly, you can tell that you're in tight quarters but there's no obvious way out. Discovering a butane lighter in your pocket, you flick it on and discover the grim truth of your situation: You are completely sealed inside a plywood box with no aid of any kind beyond what's in your pockets.
This is the ride you take for 94 minutes with yan Reynolds, who plays kidnapped, Iraq-stationed civilian contractor Paul Conroy in director Rodrigo Cortés' sophomore feature "Buried." MTV spoke with Cortes as part of our ongoing Fall Movie Preview week — the Sundance-spawned thriller will be released by Lionsgate on October 8 — and he admits that the challenges Chris Sparling's script presented are what originally got him interested in the project.
"I was sent this script that many people loved but everybody thought it was impossible to make a movie with. But I felt exactly the opposite," he explained. "I saw the possibility of doing something that had never been done. I love to go against common sense, and everything in this project has been done against common sense. This is the kind of movie that shouldn't be done, it's totally nonsense. It's foolish. It's impossible to make. And that's exactly what attracted me."
Alfred Hitchcock's influence reverberates loudly through the tiny chamber in which our protagonist is stuck — along with the viewing audience — for the length of the film. The confined setting is essential to the staging of the narrative, in that you don't ever really know who to trust. Cortes doesn't shy away from the comparison to the legendary filmmaker either.
"Hitchcock ... came to my mind, because I thought of 'Lifeboat,' for instance, just one boat with six characters never leaving the boat," he said. "So those [sorts of] technical challenges, like 'Rope' and [giving the illusion of] shooting [an entire movie] in a single take, and 'Rear Window,' with respect to [a fixed] point of view." Cortes is quick to name Hitchcock among his five favorite filmmakers, describing his film as " 'North by Northwest' in a box."
Even with aspirations to create a tale of Hitchcock-level suspense, it was a tough sell initially. "Nobody could understand [why I wanted to do it]," Cortes said. "Everybody thought it was an experimental, obscure, strange, dark film."
Sparling's script is where it all started. The pages didn't specify it, but Cortes revealed that a lot of the doubters he spoke to believed that in order to make the film accessible to mainstream audiences, both speakers participating in the film's various phone calls should be shown onscreen. He wasn't having it.
"In my opinion, that was a perfect way to spoil everything, to ruin an amazing idea," Cortes said. "Stories don't have to do with cubic inches, they have to do with [narratives] that evolve or change, you want to know more from them. And that's exactly what happens.
"I didn't want to leave it to the point of view of Paul Conroy," he continued. "I wanted everybody to be inside his shoes. I thought [it was] the key to the whole project. That was the only way of [bringing across] this physical experience. To make everybody feel what being buried for an hour and a half is."
Asked what he'd like viewers to know going into the movie, Cortes said that, in this case, less is more. "That's part of the magic of the film: You never know where you are. And every time you trust a character, you find out that you shouldn't have. At the beginning of the film, you try to trust everybody and at the end of the film you suspect everybody. This is part of the game. This is the roller coaster.
"This is not a film to be seen but a film to be experienced," he continued. "That's the way I made it. I didn't want the film to be seen only with the eyes but also with the muscles and with the bone and with the skin and with the blood. People watch it on the edge of their seats. It's a physical and sensorial experience."
From the saucy Jessica Alba in "Little Fockers" to James Franco's grueling journey in "127 Hours," the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films' biggest stars.

Danielle Staub Versus Ex-Husband
If you've seen the show, you're familiar with Cop Without a Badge, the memoir written by Staub's ex-husband Kevin Maher (NOT the father of her children, incidentally -- that's the other ex-husband). Staub has spent a lot of screen time denying the truth of the book, which paints her as a cocaine-addicted stripper involved in criminal activities -- or "prostitution whore", as Teresa Giudice memorably summed it up. In May, Staub retaliated against Maher's book with her own memoir, which describes Maher as an abusive husband who made her live in fear for her life. And now Maher is attempting to sue Staub for $5 million in damage to his reputation.
On Friday, the reality star and her ex sat down for a nine-and-a-half-hour mediation session to try and reach a settlement -- an effort that failed miserably. The back-and-forth accusations are enough to give anyone a headache: Maher said that Staub accused him of raping her on broken glass, forcing her to play Russian roulette and killing her dog. Staub denied saying any of this but argued that if she did (which she says she didn't), Maher he didn't actually have a decent reputation to harm. Maher called her a nymphomaniac. Staub pointed out that he cheated on his wife to be with her. Maher said the relationship actually ended because of her cheating. And so on, and so forth. Cut to the ending: Staub has filed a motion to dismiss Maher's lawsuit, but it seems likely that the pair will end up in court. Trial is set to begin on Feb. 16.
Say what you will about Danielle Staub, but her ex-husband sounds like a real nightmare. He's admitted that he threatened to kill her (but says there was no gun), admitted that he hit her (but says it was in self-defense), and admitted that they had violent sex (but says it wasn't rape). And whether or not she accused him of killing her dog, it's actually Maher -- not Staub! -- who made those accusations public by leaking the lawsuit info to gossip sites. We can only imagine what the marriage was like -- but in light of her relationship with this scary loser, Danielle's paranoia and self-protectiveness on Housewives make a whole lot more sense.
Do you think Danielle Staub is telling the truth about her abusive ex-husband? Chime in below!

Usher Opens Up About Marriage To Tameka Foster
Usher and Tameka Foster

Usher's personal life — or public speculation about what has happened behind closed doors — has often figured prominently in the singer's work. Fans ate up the 2004 Confessions LP, which dropped amid rumors that Usher had stepped out on ex-girlfriend Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. Similarly, the singer had endured whispers about his reportedly rocky marriage to stylist Tameka Foster before his latest album, Raymond v. Raymond, debuted at #1 this year.
On the heels of the release of Versus, an extension of Raymond, the R&B crooner opened up about why he wasn't able to make it work with Foster.
"We're two different people and we have two different goals," Usher told People. "It just was never going to work out 100 percent."
Just like he did with his monster album Confessions, the ATL singer turned the heartbreak into hits.
"My music is about where I am at the time," Usher explained. "In Raymond v. Raymond, I was going through a lot of things, and it came out in my music. My marriage fell apart and
I was suddenly a single father."
Continuing his tradition of mining his personal life for inspiration, Usher said that Versus is "about being a dating father."
Earlier this year, the buzz surrounding his relationship with Foster ramped up when Usher's track "Papers," a song about ending a marriage by signing off on divorce documents, hit airwaves. However, Usher told MTV News in March that while the track wasn't inspired by a real-life situation, it unfortunately became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
"When the song was recorded, I wasn't divorced," Usher said. "It was some reality in the contrast of trying to make it all work, having to balance a career and having a normal life. Coming in at six in the morning and arguing was a reality when you have those type of relationships. I felt that in a way, the story did touch on certain things at the time. I didn't know how realistic it would become. I didn't know I would become divorced. I did know it spoke on the contrast between trying to balance this world of being married and having this responsibility that's like a marriage at the same time. The song spoke to that place. Unfortunately, it did become a reality."
What do you think of Usher's explanation for the end of his marriage to Tameka Foster? Let us know in the comments below!

Two hundred fifty-three days have passed since "Avatar" first unveiled its blue-skinned magic on the big screen, and still we find ourselves bewitched by burning questions — intoning "What about...?" and "How come...?" like some demented incantation. Does that mean we have issues?

Sunday night's Emmy Awards were full of unforgettable moments and thrilling first-time wins for the casts and brilliant minds behind "Modern Family," "Breaking Bad" and "Glee."
But because there's no Emmy Award for the Emmy broadcast itself, MTV News decided to sprinkle a bit more Hollywood pixie dust on Sunday night's winners and losers with our own nods to the show highlights.
Instant Viral-Video Hit: Host Jimmy Fallon didn't knock it out of the park, but his opening musical tribute to "Glee," set to the tune of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run," became an overnight viral hit.
Social-Networking Fail: Fallon promised to take the Emmys into the future with some Twitter bits, but his introductions of presenters courtesy of viewer tweets fell flat nearly every time.
Best Name That Totally Sounds Like It Was Made Up: Bucky Gunts. We were totally with comedian Ricky Gervais when he said he hoped the director of the opening ceremonies for the Vancouver Olympics with the vaguely porn-y sounding name would win his category.
Worst Use of a Prop: Gervais provided many moments of hilarity during his time onstage (go back and listen to the Mel Gibson bit), but perhaps the night's most awkward moment came after his rant about how, unlike at the Golden Globes, there's no booze at the Emmys. He rectified that situation by sending waiters out into the audience with a variety of microbrews for the attendees. Things got a bit weird, though, when former "Friends" star Matthew Perry, who has spent time in rehab, had to politely decline a bottle of suds.
Think It, But Don't Say It Award: Definitely goes to three-time Emmy winner Edie Falco for joking after she won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy for her role in "Nurse Betty": "I'm not funny." Guess who else doesn't think you are? All of the other women in the category.
Best Unexpected Cameo by the Subject of a TV Movie You'd Never Heard Of: Admit it, you got a bit misty when the spunky inspiration and namesake for "Temple Grandin" stood up during David Strathairn's acceptance speech and showed off her lady rancher outfit and later took the stage with her Hollywood doppelgänger, Emmy winner Claire Danes. Author and ethical-ranching promoter Grandin was the big winner of the night, with the HBO film about the autistic cowgirl's life taking home five awards and Grandin garnering tons of headlines on Monday morning (August 30).
Win by a Show You Should Start Watching Now!: If you missed the boat on the first three seasons of AMC's "Breaking Bad," maybe the wins by cancer-stricken, chemistry-teacher-turned-meth-cooker Bryan Cranston (his third) and former-junkie, lab-partner Aaron Paul will convince you to tune in. Seriously: one of the best shows on TV.
Enough Already Award: OK, we get it. Betty White is a hilarious senior citizen!
Kicking While Down Award: As much as we love "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart," did it really deserve to win a seventh time over Conan O'Brien's short-lived stint on "The Tonight Show"? Even if it was as a sympathy vote, O'Brien earned the nod for his perseverance alone and the classy way he handled the fallout. Plus, he brought his masturbating bear to the crown jewel of late night! That should count for something.
OK, That Didn't Work Award: Jimmy Fallon rules at coming up with funny musical bits, but his roving, guitar-strumming intros to the various award categories kind of fell flat and got old ... real fast.
Can Someone Please Get This Man His Own Show? Award: "Daily Show" contributor and author John Hodgman's deadpan, near-whispered cross talk as winners walked to the stage was one of the show's home-run genre tweakers. You know you're doing it right when you don't care whether the announcer is telling the truth because his delivery is just that funny. One of our favorites: "As ['The Big Bang Theory' winner] Jim Parsons walks to the stage now, nerds across America are taking to the streets in joy, setting cars on fire, and then backing away, using their inhalers."
Product-Placement Award: Nothing was more brazen than the cast of (Emmy network) NBC's "Community" shilling for their own show, the Emmy broadcast and Infiniti cars during an ad for the new QX56. I like to call it the product-placement Triple Lindy. Then again, the spot for Jimmy Dean pork sausage products after the In Memoriam segment, featuring a tribute to late actor/ pork entrepreneur Jimmy Dean, was also pretty brazen.

'Breaking Dawn' Star Nikki Reed Is 'Starting To Get' Justin Bieber
Nikki Reed
Photo: James Lacsina/ MTV News
When it comes to rabid fans, it would seem that the "Twilight" franchise fanbase and that of teen chart-topper Justin Bieber have a lot in common. For instance, both have extremely dedicated fans, complete with playful nicknames — Twilighters and Beliebers. Both groups are prone to burst into ear-piercing screams and heavily influence awards-show voting. So when MTV News recently caught up with "Breaking Dawn" star Nikki Reed, we asked whether she had any special insight into Bieber Fever, having experienced the kind of fan-demonium he has.
"I didn't really understand that for a while, and I finally get it," she said about the singer while promoting her new flick "Last Day of Summer."
Reed said her "a-ha" moment came when she stumbled upon vintage Bieber videos online, which show the singer at 6 years old, playing guitar on the side of the road. "The excitement and passion in his eyes and his voice, this little tiny kid holding this big huge guitar ... he's singing, his voice penetrates into the world," Reed recalled. "People across the street were listening, it's truly incredible. He's a talented kid."
The "Twilight" actress added that while she might not personally fit into his demographic, she has slowly come to realize the power of Bieber. "He's got a very specific look and style thing that he's going for. I didn't understand or connect with that [at first], just like the Jonas Brothers, but I'm starting to get it with the Biebs."
Are you surprised to hear Nikki Reed is a fan of the Biebs? Tell us in the comments!

Rick Ross, Slim Thug Battle On Twitter Over Song Lyrics
Rick Ross
Photo: Larry Marano/ Getty Images
Who's the boss? Tony Danza might have some say in the matter, but rappers Rick Ross and Slim Thug took to Twitter over the weekend to lash out at each other after lyrics from the Miami rapper's leaked song "King Boss" hit the Web.
"She dated Slim Thug, but now she f---s with me," Ross spits on the track's second verse. "She finally made it to the biggest boss, luckily."
"WTF is that a diss," Slim Thug tweeted to Ross.
"Just threw [Rick Ross'] cd out the roof of the coupe," the Houston rapper later wrote. "[H]aters get no play in my ride."
According to Slim Thug, he reached out to Ross to get some clarity regarding the song but was unable to connect with the Teflon Don star.
Though the song appears to be dated, a rep for Ross had not responded to our inquiry by press time.
Slim Thug also tweeted that Ross' silence on the matter must speak for his intent, namely that the song was intended to be a fresh attack on Slim Thug. He continued to disparage Ross, eventually prompting one of the Miami rapper's crew members, Torch, to chime in.
"Not u2 [Slim Thug] aka Slim Sukka," Torch wrote. "I promise this ain't the attention u want..."
Ross, for his part, weighed in on the matter, albeit briefly, with just one message posted on Twitter. "[R]eal n---as pick up phones," he wrote. "A boss would kno better!!#trillsh--."
The pair have collaborated in the past, but it remains unclear if there was previous friction between the two artists, who both use "Boss" nicknames.

Ne-Yo 'Doesn't Know What To Do' With Songs He Wrote For Michael Jackson
Ne-Yo
Photo: Getty Images
While producer Rodney Jerkins is expecting to begin work on an album of unreleased Michael Jackson music, Ne-Yo, on the other hand, isn't sure what to do with the material he wrote for the late King of Pop before MJ's death last year. The R&B singer/songwriter told Australia's Daily Telegraph that he was sending Jackson three or four drafts a week prior to his unexpected death. More than a year later, Ne-Yo now still stands at a crossroads as he contemplates what to do with the songs he created specifically for the one and only MJ.
"I can't sell them on to someone else, as that would be disrespectful, but I also think it might be disrespectful to bring them out myself. So I don't know, I'll sit on them and wait. It's definitely quality music but they were songs written absolutely for Michael Jackson."
According to the newspaper, Jackson hand-picked Ne-Yo as well as Black Eyed Peas producer Will.I.Am to work on his comeback album. It was only a matter of time before Ne-Yo was met face to face with his musical idol.
"I felt quite bad, as I'd allowed what the media had done to his name and image to have me thinking, 'OK, what's this about to be? Is this going to be weird?' " he recalled. "But he walked in a black suit and some sunglasses and was a genuine, nice guy. And it wasn't because he wanted something from me, he just had no reason other than to be a decent guy."
During their meeting, the duo talked about the current state of the music industry, something Ne-Yo says Jackson wasn't too pleased with. "He believed what was wrong with a lot of music today is that people aren't singing about anything. If it's not about a party or sex then it's about money, and there's not really much to that."
Ne-Yo, who has penned hits for Beyoncé and Rihanna as well as himself, explained that the entertainer wanted songs that were "melodic and meaningful." "Michael told me the melodies needed to be the ones you heard once and could sing back, and the lyrics needed to have meaning and depth," he said.
Unfortunately, Ne-Yo's submissions weren't recorded by Jackson, because the singer put his album on hold to rehearse for his This Is It concert series at London's 02 Arena before passing away.
But Ne-Yo has hope that one day he'll figure out what to do with the Jackson tracks. "Hopefully the songs will see the light of day, it just has to be the right way," he said.
What do you think Ne-Yo should do with the songs he created for Michael Jackson? Should he keep them locked up or let someone else give them a try? Let us know what you think below!

VMA Nominations By The Numbers: Lady Gaga On Top
Lady Gaga
Photo: Derek Storm/ Splash News
For an artist who has quickly made a habit of smashing records, Lady Gaga improbably did it again on Tuesday (August 2). She leaped past such career stars as "Telephone"/ "Video Phone" collaborator Beyoncé to set a new record for the most nominations in a single year for MTV's Video Music Awards, which air Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET.
The Mother Monster racked up 13 nods, far outpacing the artists with the second-most nominations, a resurgent Eminem, who racked up eight. On her way to setting the record, Gaga also became the first female artist nominated for two different clips in the coveted Video of the Year category for "Bad Romance" and "Telephone."
But 13 isn't the only significant number this year. We've pored over the nominations and here's a breakdown of the other figures popping out at the 2010 Video Music Awards:
1994: The year Usher's debut was released. As for the other nominees in the Best Male Video category, Eminem hit the scene in 1996, while the other three acts in the category — Drake, B.o.B and Jason DeRulo — didn't release their full-length debuts until 2010.
25: Nominated artists who've appeared on a NOW That's What I Call Music! Compilation: Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Rihanna, Usher, Nicki Minaj, Jason DeRulo, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Drake, Eminem, David Guetta, Katy Perry, 3OH!3, Kid Cudi, Pink, Beyonce, Coldplay, David Guetta, Enrique Iglesias, Green Day, Gorillaz, Jay-Z, MGMT, Muse and Paramore.
23 years: Age difference between Best New Artists nominees Broken Bells' James Mercer (39) and Justin Bieber (16).
9: The record Gaga will have to beat if she wants to snag the distinction of most wins in a single night, currently held by Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer."
7: Number of nominated artists who are playing at this year's Lollapalooza festival: B.o.B., Dan Black, Green Day, MGMT, Mumford and Sons, Lady Gaga and the Black Keys.
6: First time nominees, including B.o.B., Ke$ha, Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons.
2 1/2: Artists nominated in the Video of the Year category who were up for the award last year: Gaga (with assist from last year's winner, Beyoncé) and Eminem.
2: Previous times Eminem has been nominated for Video of the Year.
1: Number of times the band Ratatat has been mentioned before in connection with the VMAs.
1: Opportunities for a cast member of "Jersey Shore" to hop up onstage during an award acceptance, should Enrique Iglesias win for "I Like It" from the "Shore" soundtrack album.
The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from Tuesday (August 3) through September 12.
Are you surprised by any of this year's nominees? Talk about it in the comments.

Usher Has A History On The VMA Stage

Usher will certainly have fans saying "OMG" when he hits the stage at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, but it isn't the first time he's had VMA viewers shouting his lyrics.
The R&B superstar got his first taste of what it was like to perform at the VMAs in Los Angeles in 1998 when he played the pre-show, taking the stage in a leather, graffiti-print jacket and leather tuxedo pants. Usher's performance back then was incredibly low-fi, having only a few dancers behind him dressed like the ones in his "My Way" clip, which was nominated for a VMA that year.

'Machete' Cast Thinks Lindsay Lohan's 'Gonna Be All Right'
Jessica Alba, Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez at the "Machete" premiere
Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images
Most of the cast of "Machete" was on hand in Los Angeles on Wednesday (August 25) to celebrate the premiere of their B-movie-inspired, Robert Rodriguez-directed flick. But one of the film's stars was noticeably absent: Lindsay Lohan, who had been released from rehab a day earlier. The young actress' road to recovery was on the mind of her co-stars.
"You know what, I just care about her as a person," Don Johnson told MTV News on the red carpet. "God bless her and she's gonna do fine." That sentiment was mirrored by Danny Trejo, who added, "Get home, girl! You're gonna be all right. She's gonna be fine. She knows what to do."
Another one of the flick's stars, Cheech Marin, wanted to let Lohan know he supports her, and that he hopes this incident will be a catalyst for her getting her life back on track. "I wish her all the best. I mean, she's a talented young actress," he said. "Hopefully, she won't let her personal life overwhelm her professional life ... at some point, you gotta be responsible."
Michelle Rodriguez felt that publicly wishing Lindsay the best would not just benefit her former co-star. "I just think everybody should have in mind that when you wish the best for people around you, it only makes your country, your society, your culture better," she explained. "So I think that we should all just respect the evolutionary paths of people and as much as we possibly can wish for the better, for light."
Earlier in the night, Jessica Alba praised Lohan, saying, "She's so good in this movie. I can't wait for people to see [her in] it."
Praise for Lohan's performance also came from the film's director. "She's awesome in the movie. That's what they'll see: the actress behind all that paparazzi nonsense that follows her and won't leave her alone," Robert Rodriguez said. "They'll get to see her and say, 'Oh, that's why we follow her around.' "
Check out everything we've got on "Machete."

Officially, Lollapalooza ended Sunday night in Chicago's Grant Park, with dueling sets from the Killers and Jane's Addiction. Unofficially, it ended very early Monday morning, across town at venerable rock club the Metro, with a surprise show by Them Crooked Vultures.
To the unfamiliar, the Vultures might seem like an odd choice to close out Lolla weekend ... until you realize that they're made up of Foo Fighters frontman/ former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, Queens of the Stone Age mastermind Josh Homme and Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones. And their gig at the Metro was their world premiere.
According to some reports, the Vultures actually turned down Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell's request to replace the Beastie Boys as headliners at the festival, opting to debut in front of some 1,100 super-psyched fans at the Metro, rather than 75,000 in Grant Park (tickets for the gig were announced via Foo Fighter/ QOTSA fan clubs). Meaning that, in a lot of ways, this was the most sought-after ticket in town.
Taking the stage just after midnight, the Vultures — Grohl on drums (of course), Homme on guitar and vocals, Jones on bass and keys and frequent QOTSA contributor Alain Johannes on guitar — ripped through 12 songs in 80 minutes, all taken from their upcoming debut, which may or may not be called Never Deserved the Future, and may or may not be hitting stores on October 23 (early "promo" videos touting both those facts were revealed over the weekend to be hoaxes perpetrated by QOTSA fans).
The songs, with appropriately Homme-ian titles like "Scumbag Blues," "Mind Eraser (No Chaser)," "Caligulove" and "Interlude w/Ludes," sounded pretty much how you'd expect, given the band's pedigree. They rocked, hard — Chicago Tribune critic Greg Kot described them as "fresh, invigorating and just plain nasty" — delving off into psychedelic, reverb-filled excursions and exploring proggy territory, "both of the old-school Yes variety, and the more modern Tool flavor," according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Jim DeRogatis.
It's not known if Monday's Metro performance was a one-off event for the Vultures — there have been whispers of a full-blown tour, but a spokesperson for Homme had not responded to MTV News' request for comment at press time. Nor was it clear whether or not they'll have an album out in October.
Early Monday, a Crooked Vultures Twitter account, which had previously posted links to the band's official-looking Web site and the Metro's online ticketing site — posted a link to what appears to be the group's first bit of official merchandise: a Deserve the Future T-shirt. Cost: $30.

Britney Spears Repertoire Has 'Glee' Cast Gleeking Out
"Glee" cast in the Lady Gaga-themed episode
Photo: FOX
The cast of "Glee" are used to mimicking some of the most iconic pop artists of our time, including Lady Gaga and Madonna. And when the show returns for its second season this fall, the castmembers will be gleeking out over another very special pop singer: none other than Britney Spears.
"The reason we're doing it is because so many of the kids on the show say, 'We grew up with Britney. We want to do Britney,' " show creator Ryan Murphy told MTV News about the upcoming Britney-themed episode.
The "You Drive Me Crazy" singer is already slated for a blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in the episode, meaning that the spotlight won't be on Spears herself. Instead, it's the adoring "Glee" cast's turn to pay tribute to one of their favorite singers, with rumors floating around that leading lady Lea Michele is set to hone in on Britney's schoolgirl days with "... Baby One More Time." And actress Heather Morris told MTV News that she wants to channel her inner "Toxic." But she's not the only castmember making requests.
"I think Kurt would sing 'Circus,' " actor Chris Colfer said when asked about the upcoming Spears-centric episode. "Just so he can wear a top hat."
Amber Riley, who plays the divalicious Mercedes Jones, laughed at Colfer's suggestion, and it's certainly hard to blame her. For her own part, Riley sees "Stronger" as a natural fit for Mercedes' boisterous, self-assured personality. "I like that song," she assessed with a nod.
Still, there are other "Glee" castmembers — like Naya Rivera, for instance — who aren't too concerned about which Britney number they end up covering. At the end of the day, there are more than enough memorable songs to go around for everybody.
"There are so many great Britney songs to choose from, how do you pick just one?" Rivera asked. "My fingers are crossed that my favorites will make the list!"
Which Britney songs would you like the "Glee" cast to perform? Tell us in the comments!

Ke$ha will storm this September's Video Music Awards with four nominations — she picked up three for her infectious breakthrough single "Tik Tok," as well as one for "My First Kiss," her duet with 3Oh!3. But the singer isn't quite sure she'll be able to wrest the Best New Artist Moonman from windswept heartthrob Justin Bieber.
"It's gonna be hard taking the Biebs down," she told MTV News. "It's gonna be hard, but my fans — we can do it!"
Justin Bieber isn't Ke$ha's only stiff competition on September 12; the brash singer is also up for Best Female Video against heavy hitters like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. But she hopes that her fans will party all over the ballot box and sweep her to victory.
"I have no idea! Gaga and Beyoncé and Taylor Swift — everybody in there I respect, so it's kind of like I have no disses to throw," she said. "That's a tough category. ['Tik Tok'] was my first video, so that really is exciting. I had no idea what I was doing. It was my first time making a video, so it's really kind of cool. I'm excited to see if I and a chance, but I think we can take them. Can't we? I'm down to try!"
After she found out about the nominations, she tweeted her excitement, saying, "I don't even know what to say. I'm so grateful and thankful and stunned and excited. I can't even put into words actually how much this means to me ... thank you to every single one of my fans ... I'm f---ing losing my sh--. I'm so stoked!!!!!"

Lady Gaga Close To Besting Britney Spears In Twitter Followers
Lady Gaga
Photo: Kristian Dowling/ Getty Images
Lady Gaga's near-dominance of all things social media is reaching a pivotal point: Mother Monster is poised to topple Britney Spears as the most-followed Twitter user.
According to the social-media website FameCount, which tracks the most popular entities on sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, Spears is the world's top tweeter, with more than 5.6 million followers, but Gaga is right on her heels. As of Thursday afternoon (August 19), Spears' followers numbered 5,646,028, while Gaga's online army of "little monsters" was 5,635,460 strong. The ranking could switch very soon, since Gaga has netted around 600,000 new followers this month, while Spears pulled in about 200,000. The site also lists Gaga as the most popular online entity worldwide, with more than 16 million Facebook fans and 330,000 YouTube subscribers.
Gaga's pre-eminent Twitter status is just the latest milestone marking the pop phenom's powerful viral presence. Last month, Gaga soared past the leader of the free world, President Obama, in Facebook fans. The "Alejandro" singer was also the first living person to notch 10 million fans on the intensely popular social-networking website.
Despite runaway online popularity that rivals her chart-topping music sales, Gaga still has to fend off competition from other pop stars. In July, Justin Bieber bested Gaga for the most-watched music video on YouTube with more than 245,746,720 views for the Ludacris-assisted collabo "Baby." Gaga's futuristic-disco extravaganza "Bad Romance" was close behind with 245,596,709. Bieber has since widened the gap, however, with "Baby" scoring 292,285,435 views to Gaga's 264,533,336 YouTube spins at press time.
Gaga's viral presence is undeniable, but the singer's outsize fan support has yielded results in the form of cold hard cash as well. After circling the globe on her Monster Ball Tour since November of last year, the seat-filling tour is on track to gross $200 million worldwide by April 2011.

Ke$ha Says She May Go Country 'One Day'
Ke$ha
Photo: MTV News
Last month, Ke$ha made headlines (as she is wont to do these days) when she told Paper magazine that she was considering a move to country music, saying she was "really inspired" by the songs of Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton.
On one hand, it did sort of make sense ... after all, Ke$ha is from Nashville, and her mom wrote songs for some of the greatest country singers of all time. But on the other, you know, it's Ke$ha. So, when MTV News caught up with her backstage at the Casio "Shock the World" party on Monday night, we decided to ask her about her future plans, and whether they included a countrified makeover.
"I do love country music ... [so] one day maybe, who knows. I don't think I'll stop singing until I'm dead," she said. "I'm from Nashville and my mom wrote songs for Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard and I just love old-school country music, especially. I relate to it. And I also really like how most country songs tell a story, there's a lot of storytelling and honesty involved, so I've taken a lot of my writing tips from country music ... I mean, I'm definitely not done being a rowdy f---ing crazy bitch, but when I'm done doing that, who knows?"
And, the way she sees it, the songs she wrote for her Animal album aren't really all that far from country to begin with. At least when it comes to the whole "honesty" part of things.
"The whole record is painfully, brutally honest," she said. "Like talking about my ex-boyfriend, how he cheated on me. Idiot."
Should Ke$ha go country? Tell us what you think in the comments!

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover
Adam Lambert performs "Whole Lotta Love" on "American Idol" on Tuesday
Photo: R. Mickshaw/Getty Images/ Fox
Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again."
That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.
The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon.
For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997.
Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction.

Britney Spears May Cover 'Me Against The Music' On 'Glee'
Heather Morris and Britney Spears on the set of "Glee"
Photo: Facebook
It appears viewers may get a taste of Madonna in Britney Spears' "Glee" episode.
Spears, who has been sending out updates from the set of the Fox megahit, tweeted a picture of herself in a scene reminiscent of her Madonna collaboration, "Me Against the Music." In the picture, Spears faces "Glee" castmember Heather Morris, who is decked out in a suit and blue shirt similar to the gender-bending look the superstar singer sports in the 2003 video. Instead of reprising her original look, though, Spears appears to be taking on Madonna's role, donning an all-white outfit reminiscent of Madge's look in the clip.
The singer accompanied the picture with a Twitter missive referencing the lyrics from the uptempo track: "All my GLEEKERS in the crowd, Grab a partner take it down."
In addition to possibly revamping "Me Against the Music," the upcoming Britney tribute episode will feature the smash hit that started it all. Jenna Ushkowitz confirmed to MTV News earlier this month that Lea Michele will perform a version of " ... Baby One More Time." Ushkowitz also revealed that fans may see a match-up between the "Circus" superstar and the show's in-house Brittany.
"Some old Britney, some new Britney, some Brittany of our Brittany from the glee club. So it should be funny," Ushkowitz said. "We're really excited. I love Britney Spears."
Madonna didn't participate in the making of her "Glee" tribute episode but Spears appears to be having fun on the set.
"We love GLEE! Its GLEEKERIFIC!!!" Spears tweeted on Thursday (August 19). The singer also tweeted about her first day of filming on Wednesday and sent out another picture. "What's up GLEEKS? Having so much fun on set!!" Spears typed. "Can't wait for you guys to see the episode!"

'Avatar' Producer Explains Sequel Process
Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana in "Avatar"
Photo: 20th Century Fox
Eight months after the record-breaking release of James Cameron's "Avatar," and with an expanded re-release just weeks away, the writer/director already has a massive trove of notes for a sequel. Eventually, he'll weave together plot strands from that hodgepodge of Pandora-based brainstorming.
When that process might begin — from notes to script — is anybody's guess, but as Cameron's longtime producing partners, Jon Landau, told MTV News, the filmmakers aren't going to wait for a draft before they begin to re-create the world of "Avatar."
The creative team will begin work on creature and environment development "as soon as Jim locks in on some of those notes," Landau explained. "We don't have to wait for a script for that. And there are also certain things we designed from the last movie that didn't make it in that I'm sure will make it in on the next movie."
For now, Landau described his producer role as a two-fold job. "I'm a sounding board for those ideas [in Cameron's notes]," he said. "And I'm looking to see how we can do what we do better — researching technologies and talking to people and pressing all those frontiers."
Filming on the first "Avatar" began in 2007, and whenever the sequel goes into production, Landau anticipates significant technological innovations when it comes to cameras and the capabilities of Weta Digital, which created the visual effects for the first flick.
"It's not like I'm thinking, 'OK, let's do it again and we'll do it exactly the same way,' " Landau said. "Let's do it better. Let's do it more cost-effectively. Let's be training our people now and getting them involved. If you look at 'Titanic' to 'Avatar,' what happened in the visual-effects world is that everything became more cost-effective, more time-efficient and at a higher visual quality. It doesn't mean when you look at 'Titanic' now, you go, 'Oh that's a bad movie.' It's the same thing now."
Just don't prod Landau to explain what he means by "now." Asked what his ideal start date for a second "Avatar" would be, he said simply, "Most definitely this century."
Check out everything we've got on "Avatar."
